French Clitic Movement Without Clitics or Movement
نویسندگان
چکیده
The French clitic system has posed a persistent challenge to transformational syntactic analysis, which has never produced a successful account of problems such as clitic ordering. Lexicalist alternatives, however, have never been reconciled with the full range of familiar problems and the growing body of known lexical idiosyncracies. We present a lexicalist treatment of the French clitic system that treats alìclitics' as lexical pronominal aaxes, whose ordering is templatic in nature. On our account, the order of French pronominal aaxes is independent of the general properties of syntactic structures; cliticized words, derived from verbal lexemes in keeping with general type constraints, enter the syntax fully innected. The conclusions we reach challenge grammatical architectures that seek to explain the behavior of clitics in terms of functional projections, head movement and/or the Mirror Principle.

Clitic Constructions
An analysis of French and Romance clitic constructions in simple clauses is proposed reconciling the two dominant approaches on this topic. This analysis treats them as involving both movement and base generation and, as part of a larger research program, assimilates the syntax of clitics to that of other functional heads. Accordingly, a clitic is analyzed as heading its own projection and as l...
متن کاملL2 Acquisition of French Object Pronominal Clitics: A Parametric Markedness Account of Crosslinguistic Transfer
The acquisition of French object pronominal clitics was investigated from a crosslinguistic transfer and markedness perspective of parameterization. Native speakers of English (-clitics) and Spanish (+clitics) were provided with brief training in French lexical items and the cliticization of object pronouns followed by a grammaticality judgment task including both cliticized and non-pronominal ...

متن کاملA Unified Account of Locality Constraints for Clitic Climbing and Long Scrambling
Clitic climbing (CC) in Spanish and Long Distance Scrambling (LDS) in German have certain similarities, leading to analyses (e.g., Sabel 1995, Wurmbrand 1998) that treat them in a similar way. However, they differ in restrictions placed on the movement of the clitics or scrambled NPs in cases of multiple clitics or NPs in one sentence, appearing to follow different constraints on inter-clausal ...
متن کاملClitics, Verb (Non-)Movement, and Optimality in Bulgarian
This paper addresses the issue of whether functional categories head separate projections. In particular, Pollock (1989) claims that auxiliaries head functional projections. I argue here that Bulgarian clitic auxiliaries do not head separate syntactic projections. I further argue that the respective order of Bulgarian clitics and verbs is not the result of syntactic movement (e.g. Long Head Mov...
